Gold Cup Series

What is it?

The Gold Cup Series consists of 28 officially designated road and cross country races. A person may participate in all 28 events, if desired. However, only the best 10 finishes will count in the general scoring. Each person who participates and completes 10 or more events will receive an award.

Who can enter the series?

Anyone can enter the Gold Cup Series. A person does not have to be a member of the Calumet Region Striders to participate. You do not have to live in the Calumet Region. For an event to count, you must join the Series before the event starts. If you join after an event is over, your participation will start as of the next race.

How much does it cost to join?

The entry fee for the Gold Cup Series is $15.00 for a member of the Calumet Region Striders and $20.00 for a non-Strider. This entitles a person to an official Gold Cup Series premium--a discount when you register early for each of the 28 races, an award for completing 10 races, and free admission to the annual banquet. You must also enter each individual race you wish to "run". As a Gold Cup participant, you are entitled to a $1.00 discount if you submit an early entry for each race in the Series. You must show that you are a Gold Cup participant on each application to get the discount and send a $1.00 less than the required amount. All the Gold Cup Race Directors have agreed to honor the discount on early entries. Each Race Director sets the deadline for early entries.

How is the series scored?

Each participant will be given a number indicating his/her finishing position at the finish line of each race. Report to the Gold Cup Table with your number immediately after you finish to assure you are scored correctly. If you do not report to the Gold Cup Table, you will not receive credit for the race. There are five computerized races. For these races, the Race Directors will provide the results so you do not have to report to the Gold Cup Table. They are: Heart and Sole, I CAN Race, Rotary Ramble, Scenic Ten, and the Hospital Hustle.

What are the age groups?

The following are the official age groups for men and women:

What about younger athletes?

Since students cannot compete in the entire Gold Cup Series without losing their eligibility for school sport and to encourage more student participation, a participant who is 18 years of age or younger is required to complete only seven races.

What about walkers?

There are too few at this time to create a competition, but for 1999 the Striders are talking about a competitive system based on personal improvement. Otherwise, you are a runner.

What is the Bob Stevens Disabled Runner Fund?

This fund was started in memory of a good friend and runner, Bob Stevens. Money from this fund will be used to benefit one of the disabled runners in our club. If you would like to donate to the fund, you can add a few extra dollars to your Gold Cup check. Please indicate on the face of the check the amount to be given to the Fund.
